The IT sector has a large climate impact. At present, between 3 and 4 percent of all electricity (and the associated carbon emissions) used in the world goes toward running data centers. One server alone has roughly the same climate impact as a 15mpg SUV! GaiaSpiritOnline found a solution for providing simple, affordable webhosting to our local community, while at the same time promoting environmental responsibility.

We searched for over a year to find a data center to partner with who shared our same vision, enabling us to host local web sites operated with truly green technology. GaiaSpiritOnline is proud to be able to partner with a data center who purchases 130% worth of REC's to not only run, but also to cool their data centers. Since data centers with these capabilities are not available locally, we are thrilled to be able to host all of our sites on servers in Texas, while still operating locally. Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) are tradable credits representing all the environmental benefits of 1-megawatt hour of renewable energy. So when the data center whose servers we use to host your web site purchases Texas wind RECs, it’s basically paying a Texas windfarm to generate renewable energy on their behalf.

GaiaSpiritOnline doesn’t own the windfarm, or the data center, but for every REC purchased by our data center partner, that windfarm generates 1 megawatt of Texas wind power and puts it into the grid. When our data center partner draws power from the grid, it can then claim credit for that wind power generated on its behalf.
